A Helpful Guide to Dental Fillings: What Patients Should Know

Dental fillings are one of the most common and effective treatments for restoring teeth affected by cavities. At Aesthetic Smiles by Design of Miramar, Dr. Orffa Masso is committed to helping patients understand their oral health and feel confident about every step of their treatment.

This guide explains what causes cavities, how dental fillings work, and what to expect after your restoration is complete.

What Causes Cavities?

Cavities (tooth decay) occur when harmful bacteria in the mouth produce acids that break down tooth enamel. Several factors can increase the risk:

  • Poor oral hygiene – not brushing or flossing regularly

  • Sugary or acidic foods and drinks – fuel bacteria that cause decay

  • Dry mouth – reduces natural protective saliva

  • Deep grooves in teeth – make plaque harder to remove

  • Infrequent dental checkups – allow decay to progress unnoticed

Over time, untreated cavities can spread deeper into the tooth, leading to pain, infection, or even the need for crowns or root canal therapy. Dental fillings stop this progression and restore the tooth’s strength and function.

What is a Dental Filling?

A dental filling is a tooth-colored material used to repair a cavity and restore the tooth’s natural shape. Dr. Masso uses modern, durable composite resin materials designed to blend seamlessly with your smile.

A filling appointment is typically quick and comfortable. The dentist removes the decayed portion of the tooth, cleans the area, and places the resin material, which is then shaped and hardened with a special curing light.

What to Expect After Getting a Filling

It’s normal to experience some temporary symptoms after your appointment. Here’s what most patients can expect:

1. Mild Sensitivity: Your tooth may feel sensitive to hot, cold, or pressure for a few days. This is common and usually fades gradually.

2. Numbness After Treatment: The area around the tooth may remain numb for a couple of hours due to local anesthesia. Avoid chewing on that side until feeling fully returns.

3. Bite Adjustment: If your bite feels uneven after the numbness wears off, contact Aesthetic Smiles by Design. A small adjustment can quickly resolve the issue.

4. Normal Eating and Brushing: Composite fillings harden immediately, so you can resume normal brushing and eating once the numbness is gone—though chewing on softer foods for the first day can be more comfortable.

5. Long-Lasting Protection: With proper care—including brushing twice daily, flossing, and keeping regular checkups—your filling can last many years.

Protecting Your Smile for the Future

Preventing cavities is easier than treating them. Regular professional cleanings and exams with Dr. Orffa Masso help catch early signs of decay before they become more serious. Pairing routine visits with good home care and mindful eating habits can significantly reduce your risk of future cavities.
